So, I've been having a little trouble coming up with a personal project. I have a few ideas floating around, so I figured I'd throw them out there and get some feedback:
1) I'm interested in proposing a shift in the way my hometown deals with trash and recycling, something similar to what Bloomington does (free recycling, but you pay for trash pickup). I was also considering something on a smaller scale, like convincing the local schools there to recycle more than paper, or something with the local businesses. I'm really interested in pursuing this project, but I'm not sure if the timeframe is right.
2) If that project falls through, I'd like to try and convince my apartment complex to offer recycling. There are a lot of dumpsters around, so it might be feasible to have one or two areas turned into recycle bins.
Anyone have thoughts or feedback? Thanks!
On the topic of project #1, I wanted to forewarn you that this is really really difficult to accomplish but go for it! I was on a committee for 2 years in Columbus appointed by the Major. We completed research, site visits, phone calls, etc. and came up with an economically sustainable way to offer recycling and trash pick up to the community. But, despite all the facts and community support...the political will wasn't there to actually make the change. It was extremely frustrating to see the City begin charging a price for trash pick up that I knew would have also covered the cost of recycling.
ReplyDeleteBut, I learned a TON. Not only about trash and recycling but about how politics can work. So, that part would be extremely beneficial. And...if you succeed it would be a huge win. But, if you don't...I'm here as proof that life goes on after failure!

Yea, I've been in contact with the waste management supervisor for Bloomington, to get some general information, but if this project ends up falling through, I think I'm going to try and encourage the school system to recycle more than just paper. I have a lot of contacts for that, so I may have to shift to a smaller, but more feasible, goal. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input, Laura!
Jen,
ReplyDeleteSchool system sounds more reasonable for this semester. Note what business the schools are in: education. Grants may be available to grease the skids - - and then there's all those children advocates! Some types of recycled content also yield dollars that can be spent on teaching resources.
Go for it.
